Native American Heritage Month

By: Mia Meza (Guest Writer)

The heritage theme of November is Native American, or how it is more commonly known, American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month. The month celebrates differences with one another, honors the culture, and reveres the ‘First Americans’. Did you know that Native Americans are believed to come from at the minimum of three main migrant waves out of possession of East Asia? We first started celebrating Native American Heritage Month in November 1990. The U.S. president who started it was President George H. W. Bush.

Native Americans celebrate by singing, dancing, and doing traditions that their ancestors did. For example, in pictures of Native Americans, you can mostly see them in elaborate and different costumes. Their clothes are bright and colorful and  they often dress up as animals with extravagant colors. They also wear clothes of dark colors like brown and black, but mostly at celebrations they express themselves with bright and vivid colors. They celebrate in creative ways.

For Native American Heritage Month, you can do many things. You could practice one of their traditions, dress in bright colors, or learn more about their customs and traditions. As you can tell, there are many ways to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. So what will you do to celebrate Native American Heritage Month?

                         That Doesn’t Look Right

By: Kade Andino

Note: If you do not believe any of this information you can check it for yourself as I checked these locations before writing them in here. I’m just writing this story for your mind to theorize as we all should. I’m also giving my opinion on these places so if anything is plagiarized then I promise, I promise I did not know and I’m sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for reading this.

Google Earth holds some weird looking places whether it is a confused cat to anonymous patterns on the ground, here are some of the weird locations you can find on Google Earth 2020.

1: These little bumps in the south are confusing to say the most. With there being 22 pyramid-like bumps it doesn’t help the very close to them. It looks almost like there is an empty void into the center of the Earth. 75° 0'46.98"S 0° 4'52.710"E are the coordinates for this mysterious location.

2: Sandy Island is a very confusing place as if you were to type its name into Google Earth it would pop up and there is a thin but long sandy island. The interesting thing about this place though is that it doesn’t exist in the real world. Yes, it is a ghost island, to say the least.

3: This estimated 14 miles of blinding white blur covering a black rectangle is very eye-catching as no one knows what is actually there. 70.177653°S 87.824707°E70.177653°S 87.824707°E are the coordinates for this flash.

4: This rectangle of pure gray is very confusing as it shows the geography or the place shows nothing to hide as nothing can be built on that uneven land. 30°51'20"N 81°39'48"E are the coordinates for this mind-boggling place. Similar places are 31.219183, 81.223361 and 30.155970, 81.271169

5: This place is confusing as three islands are blacked out here but when you zoom into the one next to the non-blacked-out island it appears with no problem but the other two won’t appear and are just black shapes. The coordinates are 20°42′41.73″N 92°13′23.64″W

6: This area has to be the most mind-boggling out of them all, the terrain is heavily glitched and is also blurred. It is better to see for yourself. 40°31′14″N 22°58′28″E are the coordinates for this brain-melting point.

Extras:

37°08'58.8"N 26°51'05.9"E

37°17'20.6"N 26°45'53.5"E

38°07′10.0″N 20°30′03.3″E

36°19′29.9″N 28°12′26.0″E

I showed and asked what my father thinks of these places and he said “Saint Minas has Minecraft forests on the mountain!” and he also wondered “Why would someone put a giant brown paper napkin over the mountain?”

Why Do We Have Thanksgiving?

By: Haily Ziemer

Every year most families in the US celebrate Thanksgiving. Some families would make a large meal with Turkey and Ham and celebrate for the rest of the day. Alaina Butler says, “We all go to eat together at someone’s house and catch up on what we missed when they weren’t here.” To most people, Thanksgiving is about family and enjoying a large meal together. But why? What was the first Thanksgiving like? What Happened that day? Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?

After the winter of 1620, The colonists formed a relationship with the Wampanoag tribe. The tribe taught the colonists about fishing, planting, and hunting. In autumn of 1621, the colonists collected enough food to feed everyone and more. The colonists invited the tribe for a three-day feast in honor of them helping the colonists. The feast probably didn’t include Turkey or the other modern foods we usually serve on Thanksgiving. They most likely had roast goose, corn, codfish, and lobster from their fishing and hunting. This meal is now known as the first Thanksgiving.

For later generations of colonists, Thanksgiving had nothing to do with the 1621 version of Thanksgiving. Theirs was religious and a holiday. On days of fasting, prayer, and giving thanks to God. Every year the governor of the colony would declare days of Thanksgiving for good harvests, victorious battle, rain ending the drought, and more. In 1777, the congress declared that all 13 of America’s colonies celebrated a national day of Thanksgiving that year in celebration of the victory of the British at Saratoga.

By the middle of the 19th century, many states celebrated the holiday. However, the date could be different by weeks or even months. A woman called Sarah J. Hale was a magazine artist who was determined to make Thanksgiving a National holiday so the date didn’t vary. She believed that this day would unite a Nation that was headed towards civil war. Hale began a one-woman letter writing champagne. This would give Americans reasons to make Thanksgiving a National holiday. Sarah Hale’s efforts were finally realized by Abraham Lincon who saw the potential of the holiday.

In 1863, 4 months after the victory of Gettysburg, Abraham Lincon declared that the last Thursday of every November would be Thanksgiving Day. By the 20th century, thanksgiving was a welcome day of leisure. In the 1920s, the national football league was formed. In an effort to boost attendance, the college Yale and Princeton made it a tradition to have a football game on Thanksgiving day. Parades also became a Turkey Day Tradition. The Parade tradition began in 1924 and every year millions of people go to watch the parade.

“Thanksgiving for me means that all families meet up and have a fun time while also appreciating what they have together. It’s an important thing because I get to see the people I don’t see very much,” says Alaina Butler. With how quickly modern life is, Thanksgiving gives us a day to relax, spend time with family, and remember just how much we have to be thankful for.

The Hottest Gifts that Teens want for Christmas

By: Lilliana Atkinson

AirPods

AirPods were first released on December 13, 2016. Three years later the Second Generation Airpods came out on March 20, 2019. Apple estimated that they sold between 14 million and 16 million Airpods. In 2018 AirPods were the most popular accessory product. In 2019 Apple sold 60 million AirPods and now they are very popular Apple has sold 90 million Airpods for 2020 already. So far they are a really hot gift for Christmas that a lot of people want. My friend Aubrey, a 7th grader that goes to Seeka in Yucaipa says “AirPods are easier than normal earbuds because you can walk around without having to carry your phone around. Also, they’re really comfortable in anyone’s ears in my opinion and they are super helpful. Their sound and quality are an A+!” My friend Leah says “that she does not have any of these but her brother has some and she thinks they work pretty well.”

Hoverboards

Hoverboards are amazing. They were made popular by the movie, “Back to the Future II,” starring Micheal J. Fox. Some have interesting features and a lot of history. In October 2014, American inventor Greg Henderson demonstrated a prototype hoverboard working on a magnetic levitation principle. Similar to maglev trains, the hoverboard requires a surface of non-ferromagnetic metal such as copper or aluminum to function, carrying up to 300 lb while hovering 1 inch above the surface. Four engines are used to power the magnetic levitation, with the option of applying thrust and spin to the board, under user control. The prototype was promoted in a campaign on Kickstarter the day of the news coverage, with a price of $10,000 for the first ten boards. December 24, 2015 ARCA Space Corporation claimed it developed a hoverboard named ArcaBoard, and the batteries can provide energy enough for six minutes of hovering at a height of up to 30 centimeters. It has 36 electric motors that power 36 fans. Hoverboards are a hot item this Christmas. Currently hoverboards can go for $127 to about $200 on Amazon.

Nintendo Switch

As an eighth-generation console, the Nintendo Switch competes with Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4. The console shipped nearly three million consoles in the first month of its launch, exceeding Nintendo's initial projection of two million. Within one year of it’s release it achieved over 14 million units sold worldwide, outselling total lifetime sales of the Wii. By the start of 2018, the Switch became the fastest-selling home console in both Japan and the United States. As of September 2020, the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite have sold more than 68 million units worldwide. The Switch was officially released on March 3, 2017 worldwide in Japan and most English-speaking and Western markets. In US $299.99 in the United States now it varies where you look, if there are deals, and the types. I received a Switch last Christmas and love it. I can play on a handheld console or switch over to the TV mode just by docking it. When my friends come over we always play the Nintendo Switch. I highly recommend a Nintendo Switch for a Christmas gift.

Parent Note

I suggest you should only get one because these are all expensive and especially if you also add accessories and games with these items.

New books to read

by emerson direen

There are many new books you can read and most of them are not worth the read. So let me tell you what books are good and why you should read them. One of the books is Hero by Jennifer Li shotz. The book is about a retired rescue dog that gets stuck in sticky situations. And the best part about it is no matter how many times the little kid gets in trouble the dog always saves him. They meet a stray injured puppy named scout. Hero really wants to get the little pup home.
Another good book to read is the geronimo stilton series. He goes on wild adventures with his friends and family. He also meets new friends during his adventures. He has different series like spacemice, cavemice, kingdom fantasy and journey through time. This is a good book because it is a very funny book series. This is a good book series for people who are not good at reading because it is such a slow paced book series.

Last but not least we have the Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. It is about a boy named Milo who is always sad and he goes on a trip and takes a wrong turn. He goes on a road trip because he has nothing else to do. On the road trip he goes to concussion land where things seem oddly different he got there by jumping. When he was there he learned about time from a time ticking watchdog named tock. And he embarks on a trip to save rhyme and reason. Milo realized that life is far from dull in fact it is exciting beyond his wildest dreams. Sage g said “this article helped me pick out what book to read next”. My dad said “I never read that many books. I must read them”. Now you know what books to read! I love all of these books. I have read all of them and I hope you do too and for me to say I like a book. I never read books. einstein said “time is relevant” so spend your time wisely by reading a book and who knows maybe after reading a book you might learn a few skills. I hope you liked reading this article as much as I did writing it so have fun so sit down and read a book.

Why Girls an Boys should be equal

By:Amirah Jones

Girls and boys aren’t always treated equally and sometimes they are supposed to be held up to high standards that they most likely don’t want. Girls are supposed to be super feminine and only want to go shopping and another stereotype is that they only like the color pink. Boys on the other hand are supposed to be super masculine and want to play sports.I asked my mom what is a place where girls and boys aren't treated equally and she said “ the workplace is definitely a major one.” One example that proves boys and girls aren't treated equally is when we compare Lebron James and Sue Bird. They both play professional basketball and have similar if not the same stats but Sue only makes about $350k and Lebron makes 37.44 million dollars. Another example is a workplace or most jobs. If a man and a woman had the same job and both wanted a promotion or a raise the man is most likely to get that promotion or raise just because he is a guy. That’s why most CEO’s of a company or someone in a high position at the job is a guy. If it is a girl they probably had to work two times as hard than the guy. Chloe from the 8th grade said “ me and my twin brother aren't treated equally just because he is a boy.”

Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War

Written By: Bryce Jacobson

Call of Duty Cold War came out on November 13th. This game is a sequel to the popular game Call of Duty Black Ops. It will include popular characters such as Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Hudson no last name given. Call of Duty Cold War will be taking place around the 1980s taking place in Vietnam, Turkey, and East Berlin. Call of Duty Cold War will also include the famous Zombies mode except it's a little different this time. In the older Black Ops games, you would play the game until you were dead or overrun by zombies, But in the new  Call of Duty Cold War, you can call in an extraction helicopter to bring a safe end to your zombies gameplay. There will also be custom loadouts in the Zombies mode so that you could use your own weapons of your design. That was talked about Call of Duty Cold War multiplayer. The game will include an old favorite map Nuketown, The other Maps will include Armando, Miami, Moscow, Satellite, and Cartel. Based on all the readings Call of Duty Cold War seems like it's going to be a big hit with Call of Duty fans. I rate this game a 9 out of 10. Brock Murray a fellow Call of Duty player says that “It better be better than Call of Duty 2019 or I am not buying it”. Aiden Hancock, a fellow Call of Duty player says that “He likes the game but also does not like it”.

How to Play Among Us

By: Caydence Gourley

The game among us is a game where you try to do tasks without being caught by the impostor. Before I tell you more about the game I asked my sister what her favorite part about the game is. She responded with: “I like catching people. There are 10 players in the game.” There can be up to 10 players per game. There can be up to 3 impostors but it is better to play with one impostor. When you first get on the game at the top of the screen it will say “enter name” and you will have to change your name. You are able to change your name whenever you'd like. After that you will see that there are options, if you would like to practice the game you would press “freeplay”.

If you want to play a game with other players you press “online”. Once you press on line you will see a list of games to join and you click on anyone you'd like. Once you start the game you will get a chance to change your outfit and the color of your character. All you have to do in order to change that is walk up to the computer and it should start glowing. Once you walk up to it the bottom right of your screen should say “use” and you click on it and get to change the look of your “among us player”. Once there are 10 players in the game, the game will start. If you are a cremate: The top right corner of your screen will have a chat box and that is where you could chat with people online. The game will start and once it starts all you do is walk around until you see something glowing, If you see something glowing then you walk up to it and press the “use” button. If someone catches you you lose the game.

If you are the imposter, Once you start the game it will say “imposter” If you are the imposter on the bottom right corner it will say “kill” when you walk up to people you will try to catch them. I asked my mom what her least favorite part about the game is and she responded with: “I don't like the tasks.” You need to make sure you don't catch the cremate in front of other people.

Fun Activities to Do on Thanksgiving!

By: Alaina Butler

Have you ever wanted to not just eat with your friends or family on Thanksgiving but also have some fun? Here are some activities that may help you do just that. Holly Bradley says, “I feel like Thanksgiving is a bonding experience for family and just to enjoy everyone’s company and get to know each other.” First, is Thanksgiving charades! For those of you who don’t know what charades is, it’s basically a game where you have a box full of phrases on pieces of paper and you have to draw one of the pieces of paper from the box and act like that phrase without saying a word. If someone guesses your phrase then they get a point and draw a phrase next. For those of you that have to use things like Zoom and Google Meets, you can just write things down along with your other friends or family. When you’re done doing that, you're all set now you just take turns drawing, and the people who have to guess what you are will just unmute and ask until they get it right. Remember, Thanksgiving charades are just charades but Thanksgiving related. This game especially works with big groups of people!

Second, on the list is hand turkeys! You trace your hand with a pencil (or markers, pens, crayons, etc.), and then color your four fingers (excluding the thumb), you color each finger a different color so it’ll look like turkey feathers. Now for the thumb, you can glue googly eyes onto the thumb of the turkey and there you have a hand turkey! This is usually for teens and below but feel free to do it yourself!

The third is balloon turkey shooting! Balloon turkey shooting is basically like darts but for kids! You blow up about 10 balloons and fill them up with helium and then tie a string and use a rock to ground the balloon. Once that’s done, draw a turkey on the balloon and write how many points you want it to be worth when hit. Then, get something to shoot with. (I suggest a Nerf gun or bean bags) Once everything is set-up all you have to do is have fun! When you have Thanksgiving it will be even more exciting and fun! Bradley says, “I usually used to draw hand turkeys and solve Thanksgiving crossword puzzles when I was little.”

Awesome Turkey Facts

By:Aaliyah Montes

Would you like to know a little bit  about turkey’s? Well I’m going to tell you about them. I asked my sister Anjelina if she liked turkeys she said “Yes, I do like turkey’s” I also asked her what she liked most about them she said “I like the flavor of them when I eat turkey on Thanksgiving”

  • A turkey is a large bird

  • Boy turkeys are gobblers

  • Girls turkeys are hens

  • A group of turkeys is a flocks

  • Turkeys eat plants and animals

  • The fleshy folds on a turkey’s neck a wattle

  • Wild turkeys can fly just far enough to still be slaughtered easily

  • Turkeys, the bird associated with Thanksgiving were first encountered by the Spanish in Mexico

  • Turkeys spend most of their time on the ground during the day, they sleep in trees at night

  • The modern domesticated turkey descends from the wild turkey.

  • Wild turkeys are able to fly at up to 55 mph, however only for relatively short distances. Most domestic turkeys however are unable to fly due to being selectively bred to be larger than would be suitable in wild circumstances.
